I stayed 3 nights at the Copthorne Orchid Hotel Penang in October 2016 when I found a really good rate at S$30 (RM90/US$22) a night. Here’s a short review/overview of my stay at this property.

Hotel Exterior

Hotel Lobby
Lobby
The lobby was slightly dated, however it was very clean and polished. Makes perfect sense given how empty this hotel was.
Check-in
Check-in took longer than expected, around 15 minutes. The clerk was on the phone while checking me in. Definitely doesn’t give a good impression. Although he was quite friendly after he hung up the call.

Superior Room

Bathroom
Rooms
Stayed in a Superior room with a fantastic view of the sea. The room was in dire need of renovations. It was extremely dated and there were scuff marks everywhere. The hotel even uses an actual key instead of a card! That’s how old it is. However the rooms were clean and hence I didn’t have much of an issue with it.

View from the room
The view was the best thing about the hotel. I would come back to this hotel for the view alone! The architecture of this hotel ensures that (almost) all rooms have full views of the stunning sea.
Facilities
We didn’t use any of the facilities but the hotel had a pretty standard pool, but for those wanting to do a work out, the “gym” only has 3 machines in a small room. Another outstanding feature of this hotel is the private beach for some peace and quiet.
Location
Situated in Tanjung Bungah, right in the middle of Batu Ferringhi and Georgetown, it’s easy to go to both places (with a car). There’s nothing much in the vicinity.
Conclusion
For S$30 (RM 90/US$22) nett per night, i would certainly come back in a heartbeat! The views alone is already worth the money. However, the rooms definitely needs some sprucing up. Would I pay full rack rate for this hotel? Probably not. But if i come across this rate again, I’d book it without thinking twice.
